My 11 year old wants to be a vegetarian?

She has a cousin who is 18 and is a vegetarian and every time we see her (which is around the holidays) my daughter wants to follow the same eating habits. It has always been a phase but this time she seems more serious. I'm worried about a couple of things ~ her health is the main thing and no one else in our house eats this way.My 11 year old wants to be a vegetarian?
I became a vegan at a very early age. I went into it not knowing exactly what my body needed as I was growing. To this date I got so sick that my doctor said if I didn't revert to an omnivorous diet, he would seriously consider admitting me to hospital.

There are plenty of well-written vegetarian cookery books out there that let you know exactly what is in food and what you need to remain healthy. I would suggest buying her one of these and letting her read it, to better prepare herself for the work required.

While I believe that one can stay healthy on a vegetarian diet, she needs to know that it needs a lot of work. I would also suggest telling her that she can prepare her own meals (most kids can't be bothered and would revert to what ever is being cooked for the rest of the family).

I would keep an open mind though. If, this time, she is more serious about it, perhaps she is willing to put in the work.

One last thought, please let her know that stopping eating meat straight away is a very dangerous thing to do. When starting on a diet like this, you must slowly decrease the amount of meat or animal by-products you are consuming over a few weeks.

Hope that helps. :)
I am a nutritionist

there is no reason you would need to "take it slow"

there are no negetive effects from cutting meat out of your diet "cold turkey" although starting slow may help you adjust to your daughters new diet, it will have no effect on her

I am 11 and I am a very healthy vegetarian! I say let her try it! It is very healthy to be a vegetarian and it isn't as hard as people make it sound. But you, as her parent, need to make sure that you buy her foods that give her the nutrients she needs. I would reccomrnd buying a good vegetarian cook book with recipes that are appealing to the entire family. And there are plenty of resources online that give all the information and stuff that you need.

GOOD LUCK!
Convince her to just eat the right things (low fat, low calorie, high protein, fiber, etc.) Her body needs certain nutrients that a vegetarian diet will not provide. My 17 year old daughter did it for a while and while she lost weight, she was miserable. She lost energy (she runs for school and her times went down) and her body craved protein. Tell her to just eat smart. My 11 year old wants to be a vegetarian?
If she wants to be a vegetarian then I'd say good for her! I'm not a vegetarian and don't know anyone who is, but I think it's a great thing to be a vegetarian. If I didn't think I'd die without my bacon cheeseburgers then I'd go for it too :-)

Anyway, if this is what she wants then encourage her. Vegetarian is the way God intended it!
I don't know if it's a good idea for a growing, developing person to eliminate heme protein (the complete protein found only in meat products) from her diet altogether. I know vegetarians believe that eating two incomplete proteins together makes a complete protein like that found in meat products, but these are not used as efficiently by the body as heme protein. If I were you, I would do a lot of research on vegetarianism--not just from the point of view that supports vegetarianism, but also discussions of what is missing from the body that has no meat in its diet. And talk to her pediatrician about whether this is a good idea.

Maybe you can reach a compromise with her whereby she cuts out certain less healthy pork and beef products, but continues to eat chicken and fish. After all, people are omnivores for a reason. Good luck!
My mom is a vegitarian, and so is one of my best friends. It isnt unhealthy, and it brings a lot of different cultures and reciies to the dinner table. She can eat rice, soybeans, and a lot of cookbooks have things like veggie chilie and stuff.
my whole fam ily is vegetarian except me. they are perfectly healthy. you get protein from beans and carbs from bread and calcium from yogurt and vitamins from fruit...it will not affect your health adversely...
One word: Nutritionist!

If she wants to follow the "trend" of her older cousin, then allow her to explore the lifestyle of vegetarianism in a healthy way. I have been a vegetarian and it is REAL EASY to get a defenciency such as low iron or protein. There is nothing bad about being a vegetarian, and it is definately a great path to take. Good luck!
That's the same age I was when I stopped eating meat. Just make sure she still eats all of the daily recommendations on the food pyramid, instead of meat, she can have beans, nuts, or tofu. Make sure she doesn't go on the become a junk food vegetarian. If this is what she really wants, help her make the right decisions and be supportive, there is nothing wrong with becoming a vegetarian, its a very healthy lifestyle. I haven't eaten meat for over half of my life now.
im 13 and im a vegetarian plus i play like 4 sports and i have enough energy to get through the day one this is that when i first began i lost some weight and i have kept it off
You don't have to worry.I'm a vegetarian and started at 12.I'll be 13 next week.Being a vegetarian is healthier than being a meat eater because heart disease starts as a child and a vegetarian diet reduces the risks. Also the child will need alot of special foods like Tofu and protein since she won't eat meat. There is also a difference between being a Vegan and vegetarian.Vegan like myself don't drink milk or eat fish.Vegetarian's eat fish and drink milk/dairy.Soy milk is not regular milk.My parents and friends worry about me but they shouldn't because I do my research. If you go to Pet2.com then you can find out some facts. If you need more e-mail me at Vegi_tarian@yahoo.com.
I would first make her research it so that she knows exactly how and what she can eat in order to stay healthy. Then if she still wants to try it, let her. But monitor what she's eating, and you may need to change or add foods to your family menu in order to satisfy her nutritional needs.
No matter what your reasons for eating a more vegetarian diet, there鈥檚 no denying the obvious health benefits that are derived from removing of red meat from your diet. On average, vegetarians have lower levels of the blood fats, cholesterol and triglycerides than meat eaters of similar age and social status. High levels of blood fats are associated with an increased risk of heart disease. Lacto-ovo vegetarians, those who eat eggs and dairy products, which contain cholesterol-raising saturated fats and cholesterol, have higher cholesterol levels than vegans. But even among lacto-ovo vegetarians, cholesterol levels are generally lower than they are among meat eaters.

Researchers have found that older men who eat meat six or more times a week are twice as likely to die of heart disease as those who abstain from meat. Among middle-aged men, meat eaters were four times more likely to suffer a fatal heart attack, according to the study. As for women, who are partly protected by their hormones and generally develop heart disease later in life than men do, the risk of fatal heart disease has been found to be lower only among the older vegetarians. In a 1982 study of more than 10,000 vegetarians and meat eaters, British researchers found that the more meat consumed, the greater the risk of suffering a heart attack. Though eliminating meat from the diet is likely to reduce your consumption of heart-damaging fats and cholesterol, substituting large amounts of high-fat dairy products and cholesterol-rich eggs can negate the benefit.

To glean the heart-saving benefits of vegetarianism, consumption of such foods as hard cheese, cream cheese, ice cream and eggs should be moderate. And the introduction of more vegetables, fruits and raw foods will definitely enhance the benefits of abstaining from eating meat.
If your child wants to be a vegetarian let her you should support her on anything she wants to do.Actually being a vegetarian is a lot healthier then you think that means she will get to eat more vegetables and fruits then she thinks. There are many recipes you and your whole family can enjoy without meat, poultry, and milk.Soy milk is recommended for a vegan.
Let her do it, nothing wrong with vegetarian, but may be you have to help your sister by browsing to the net, find good food and health advice for vegetarian
I say let her do it! Now I LOVE meat!!! But if she really wants to eat that way then why not? I WOULD however make her do research on the best way to get all of her dietary needs taken care of!!! Good luck.
being a veggi is not unhealthy, i have been 1 since i was 10, and i am heathier than ever.but my only warning is u will get stomachaches 4 about 1 week while ur body is adjusting to the change. it is also flushing out all the meat toxins. i am glad to go veggie and would never change back.sum suggestions r try the only meat u eat is poltry or fis or ham. thats wat i do. i still eat fish(the truth is i couldent give it up). if she doesnt like beans or nuts eatin 1 meat is a good idea.try getting her a good veggie cook book like: the essential vegetarian cookbook by diana shaw.book like this will give yummy ways to get all the nutrients.or 4 christmas wrap up a book and anownce u will let her go veggi.if no 1 in the HISTORY of our family(yes i checked) has gone veggi until i came around. GO VEGGI IT IS GOOD. but i'm not 1 of those 'every 1 in the world should be veggis' person- i belive there should be a healthy balence between the 2
Insist on a visit to the doctors office for a discussion with him/her!

Then maybe a nutritionist- if you have health insurance this should be covered- if you don't allow her to explore this option now she will rebel at every opportunity
hey that reminds me of, me. yeah my cousin made me a vegetarian, but after like a two years i stopped. i was trying to follow my cousin cuz she said that eating animals is nasty and hurting them just for food. she made me stop eating meat, but i got over it. i dont insist on ur daughter to be a vegi, its bad and u eat less and less
I am a nutritionist

Being vegetarian is a great way for your child to improve her overall health! If it is something that she is really interested in encourage her to make appropriate meal plans for herself and to keep a food diary so you can assess that she is eating correctly.

If you need help you are welcome to contact me.

I would also recommend a free vegetarian starter kit http://www.goveg.com/order.asp
Everyone is different, and it is normal for her to have her own opinions on stuff, and you should support her on that. It may last her whole life, or it may just last a couple days, she is young yet it is probablly just a phase.
If she wants to be a vegetarian she needs to eat properly. Have her read books on healthy eating, and ask her how she is going to eat a balanced diet. She will have to eat more than just the vegitables from the dinner that you cook. She can learn to cook vegetarian dishes for herself. It's a much healthier way to eat, but she has to do it right. Also, make an appointment with her doctor so she can discuss any health concern you or her doctor may have with her new diet.
If she wants to be a vegetarian, tell her that it is not easy. She will need to give up hamburgers, chicken, fish, etc. Tell her that she will have her health at stake too. I used to want to be a vegetarian, but when I found out all the things I needed to give up, I was like, forget about it. Vegeterians have a good cause, not to kill animals, but God intended for us to eat meat, or else he wouldn't have given it to us. I mean, killing animals like tigers and elephants are different, but chickens and sheep and cows, we're supposed to eat it. You know what I mean?
so let them be. there is no harm. if she wants to be let her be. it just might be phase. there is no harm in being a vegetarian.
let her. she is old enough to make her own eating habits. im 11 and a vegetarian. there is a lot of good meatless food, like Boca burgers. they r yummy and more healthy than reg meat. im proud of ur daughter for making that choice.just make sure she has vitamins and healthy foods to make up for no meat.
Let her become a vegetarian, people who don't eat meat have fewer health problems and it also lowers your risk of certain cancers. Just make sure that she eats other proteins and irons in other foods that she may be lacking in a vegetarian diet. And make sure she takes a multi-vitamin everyday and she will be healthy. I have been a vegetarian for 9 years now, and I feel better than I ever have. I am also the only vegetarian in my family so far, it is pretty easy to adjust to.
well first i would tell her that you don't get all the things you need to grow tall and ask her if she is sure if she really dose let her do it she will get tired of it eventually
mabye you should let here be a vegatarian if she pays for her special foods, and since health is an issue mabye you should make her eat chicken or fish once a week just so that her calcium level stays up.You could also try asian foods more it tastes great she gets her vegatarian and you get to try somthing new. you could also make like a rice and vegatarian dish and a meat dish. you get what you want she gets what she wants!

indian food has great vegatarian foods.
its a good idea- america is obese and the children are veryyyy obese but make sure she gets nutricien (sp) such as beans and such.
Being a vegetarian is not bad for your health, as long as she gets enough vitamins that she lacks from food in a daily multi-vitamin. If she doesn't want to eat meat, don't force her. You might even speak to a nutritionist at your local hospital on recommendations for vegetarians. Learn more about it before you refuse to allow her to be one. Best of luck to you!
no, we are omnivores she is growing and needs meat.

when she has her own household she can eat what she wants until then , she eats with the family

apart from it may be harmful to her development it means more work fo ryou, two menus two sets of buying she has no right to demand that of you

for everyone below if they want her to be a vegitarian let them cook for her, let them buy for her

great of them to offer advise that means more work for you

My friends vegetarian but only like part time?

k so my bff is sayin tht shes vegan. but she drinks milk and eats eggs so she cant be? so im like ok, ur vegetarian, but she just dosnt eat pork cuz she dosnt weanna eat piggys? but shell eat peporoni pizza? is she realy vegetarian? or is there a name for like a part time vegetarian? plzz answer! thx!My friends vegetarian but only like part time?
Yeah, and I'm only gay on the weekend!!

Simple answer: She's not vegetarian and she's definitely not vegan.
she isn't really a vegetarian... i would not confront her though...she may get mad at you and say "yes i am...how would you know" Theres is no such thing as part time vegetarianMy friends vegetarian but only like part time?
No, she's just picky about the foods she eats.
We call those folks conversational vegetarians. My friends vegetarian but only like part time?
Definitely not a vegetarian.
She's definitely not vegan. I know people that drink dairy and eat eggs and call themselves vegetarians, but with her eating pepperoni? No. She's not a vegetarian, either.
Oy, she would drive me nuts. She's surely not a vegetarian, and DEFINITELY not a vegan. No such thing as a "part time vegetarian." It's a commitment, not a job.
she is 100% not a vegetarian.

you can't be a part-time vegetarian either. if you can, then techincally every time you eat a meal that doesnt have meat, then you are a vegetarian. and thats just stupid. lol
she's a girl who says she doesn't like pork but eats it anyaway.

she's not vegan and she's not vegetarian.

the word your looking for is carnivore
Your friend is simply an omnivore.
No such thing as part time vegan/vegetarian. And pepperoni has pork in it unless it is beef.
If she wants to call herself a vegetarian, let her. It is only a word not a religion, well maybe a cult.
Your friend is not vegetarian, part-time or otherwise.
Meat is never vegetarian.

She ain't veggie. :-)

What is the every day life of a vegetarian?

I am really wanting to become a vegetarian (%26amp; eventually maybe a vegan). But I can get discouraged easily. So a few questions for any vegetarians out there..

What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

What to do when you go to a restaurant?

What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

Did you give into temptations at times?

What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian?|||What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

Eat only the vegetarian portion or talk to the host before going to find out if the meal is vegetarian and if I should either eat before hand or bring a dish of my own.

What to do when you go to a restaurant?

I used to be worried about this one but I've found that even in a steak house there is always something I can eat (like a baked potato and salad). Ask your waiter to "hold the meat" of any item on the menu, and don't be afraid to ask if lard or chicken broth or other meat products are in specific items. If you can't find something, tell your waiter that you are vegetarian and do they have any suggestions for you.

What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

I no longer live at home but no one else in my family is vegetarian so this can become an issue. Simply avoid the meat portion of a family meal, make your own food, or suggest meals that work with your diet. As vegetarians/vegans are a minority it is inevitable that you will end up at a table with others eating meat. Make sure that there are options for you in the cupboard like bread and peanut-butter, cheese and crackers, rice and beans etc and you will be fine.

If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

This was never an issue for me. Once I had been on a meat free diet for a week or two and learned how much better I could feel as a vegetarian, meat no longer even smelled good to me. I am occasionally tempted by fish dishes and I've indulged on fish once or twice for special occasions but if your reasons for becoming vegetarian are strong, you shouldn't have an issue here.

Did you give into temptations at times?

Only a couple times, and only with fish. I had the fish course at my sister's wedding and I've had salmon on a few Christmases, but otherwise no and it's been over 6 years.

What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian?

Dealing with others ridicule over my diet (which is silly because it doesn't affect others in any way shape or form), and having to constantly answer idiotic questions from omnivores. lol... I'm sure you'll do fine if you're committed.|||1. I inform the host in advance that I am a vegetarian, but make sure to tell them not to go through too much trouble. I may offer to bring a vegetarian dish to share.

2. At a restaurant I choose the vegetarian option. I have never encountered a restaurant that didn't have at least one of those. Even steakhouses!

3. Respect their eating habits and offer to cook your own meals and the occasional family meal. Personally I became a vegetarian as an adult so it never became an issue. And my family is supportive anyway. At Christmas my husband and I usually cook a completely vegetarian festive meal for my family at my parents' house.

4. I have no problem keeping motivated. I DO get cravings for meat but I just choose not to act on them. My reasons for being a vegetarian haven't changed, so I don't see why my actions should change.

5. So no, I don't give into temptations. My take on this: not every itch needs to be scratched.

6. Becoming a vegetarian was far far easier than I would have thought beforehand.|||What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

either eat before or eat the veggies and fruit that's there or a salad if they've made one.sometimes my friends will make a vegetarian meal if i come over( but i never ask them to but it's okay if you do) :]

What to do when you go to a restaurant?

order something vegetarian.most restaurants have veggie options or substitutes

What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

I'm the only vegetarian in my family.I eat a lot of salad . veggies and fruits.my dad buys me veggie patties and veggie 'chicken' strips and a lot of canned beans and veggies and fruit:D

If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

my health and my care for animals :]

Did you give into temptations at times?

nope :]

What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian

getting some people to except it :] they did after a while

I''m just a vegetarian right now.I still eat some dairy and eggs but soon i'd like to go vegan too|||Im a vegan, but Ill answer these anyway.

1))) What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

I would do what ever I was going to do there anyway, except I wouldn't eat animal products.

2))) What to do when you go to a restaurant?

I generally don't, honestly haven't been to one in years, but if I did go to one Id probably just eat salad, and french fries. Of course a vegetarian would have MUCH bigger choices at restaurants then me though.

3))) What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

Why should I care if im the only vegetarian/vegan in the family?

4))) If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

I honestly don't know, its different for everyone.

5))) Did you give into temptations at times?

I went from a omnivore diet to vegan diet overnight. And I never gave into temptations, not even once.

6))) What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian?

Really ******* annoying meat eaters who go off on a rant even though you never provoked them at all.|||1: i take my own meal in a container and heat it up in microwave but sometimes they cook veggie :)

2: i order a vegetable stir fry

3: i cook my own meals but sometimes my family eats vegetarian too!

4: i just thought of animals

5: YES but i pulled through and never gave in now it doesn't tempt me try the brand quorn mmmmm

6: people in my class teasing me about it

hope this helped

good luck

bi|||I don't have any friends.

I order several plates of delicious food.

What's to do about it?

Knowing meat is cruel, disgusting, unhealthy, and environmentally-devastating.

I was never tempted.

Reading product labels.|||eat sleep and ****|||What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

There are several things you can do, and it's always good to speak with the host of the party. It's not rude to ask if there will be vegetarian options. You can offer to bring some food of your own, or if you don't get a chance to talk about it, bring something anyway. You can also eat before you go if you're worried that you might not get enough to eat there.

What to do when you go to a restaurant?

A lot of restaurants are really vegetarian-friendly and will have a vegetarian menu or at least several veg options on their menu. It really depends on where you live though and what restaurants you have around there. If you're not satisfied with the choices at the places where you are used to eating, don't be afraid to go to a new restaurant. You can always ask your server what's vegetarian.

What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

As a vegetarian you have to be sort of independent and rely on yourself for your meals. I had to learn how to cook when I was pretty young because my mom wouldn't cook vegetarian for me. It's not a bad thing though because cooking skills are something you will use for your entire life. You can also help out the person doing the cooking or make a side dish of your own so you're sure to have something you can eat, and they will appreciate that.

If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

It wasn't difficult because I like veg food a lot better anyway.

Did you give into temptations at times?

no

What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian?

It was super easy!|||What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

I eat before, just in case the only food they serve has meat in it. Its never a problem for me, cause all parties i go to have non meat options

What to do when you go to a restaurant?

I order pasta or salad (:

What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

My cousins and brother thought it was wierd at first but after 3 years theyve accepted it. Everyone is very accepting of my choices and theyre not bothered by it. My mom actually likes some of the non-meat dishes i make (: its not like vegetarianism is a disease or something lol, theyll understand. It also helps that im not a preachy veg head. I support animal rights but im not all like eat meat and youll die!! I dont hand out flyers of slaughtered animals. Im not physco so its easier on them. I dont condone eating meat, i could care less if someone eats it in front of me, i just dont wish to eat it

If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

After a week or so of not eating meat, i realized i really didnt miss it. There are alternatives to everything that are 100x healithier and better. I knew in the long run my body would thank me. I also remembered the reasons why i stopped eating meat. You always need to remind yourself your reason for doing something and if its significant enough youll stay motivated

Did you give into temptations at times?

Never. Ive smelt my moms cooking and seen how amazing some meat dishes look at times, but then i realize ive come all this way and i shouldnt just stop for a sensation thatll wear off as soon as im hungry again

What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian?

When i first gave up meat, i felt tired and i got a little sick cause i basically cut off my iron supply, but then i changed my diet by adding more peanut butter and soy products and stuff like that. Its hard finding new meal plans if youre used to eating meat all the time, but as soon as you get a few dishes you can cook and that you enjoy, its really easy. If only i was this motivated for everything else ^___^ lol|||What to do when you go to a friend's house or party or something of that nature?

All my friends know I'm a vegetarian, so if they're kind enough to invite me to a party, they tend to be thoughtful enough to have veggie food available. It's not hard, even the most militant meat eater will eat pasta salad, bread, cheese, fruit platter, crudit茅s etc. so it's not like I've got to have a seperate table or anything.

What to do when you go to a restaurant?

I choose a dish from the options available. Just like an omnivore.

What to do if the rest of your family isn't vegetarian?

Well, I don't try to convert anyone, if that's what you mean. To each their own.

If you transitioned to a vegetarian from eating meat, what kept you motivated?

The reasons why I did it - compassion, animal welfare. Now I wonder what keeps some people motivated to eat meat.

Did you give into temptations at times?

I had a craving when I was pregnant for chicken. I ate it once. I'd only been veggie for about a year then, so that's 15 years completely meat free now.

What was the hardest about becoming a vegetarian?

Giving away the meat in my freezer. I couldn't just throw it out, I won't waste food, so I gave it to a neighbour of mine.|||I was a vegetarian for a couple months over a bet and I didn't find it to hard. But, vegan would be extremely hard.

If you go to a friends house you have to let the friend know and if you were at a party you just have to find foods that don't have meat fish, ect. Most of the time this results in hunger.

In resturants, there are some menus that indicates which meals are for vegetarians and almost all resturants have at let one meal for vegetarians and/or vegans. If not, you have to find something and ask the waiter. For example, you could usually have salad if it doesnt have bacon bites or chicken. If they do ask for them not to put it.

I had to made my own meals if we were having a meat based meal. If not I would take more of everything that doesnt have meat.

Well, personally I was on a bet but I wanted to do it anyways. I am a animal lover and everytime I started to think of quiting I would just think of the animals. It it also better for your health. vegetarians are said to live 5 years longer than meat eaters and vegans live 7 years longer according to studies.

No, sometimes when we were having steak I would really want to have some but my family kept me going,

The hardest part was probably when I wasn't at home because it can be hard to find something that doesn't have meat.

It definitely isn't that hard to do if you kept motivated. I was only supposed to do it for 2 months but I acually did it for 4 months. I think you should try it and if you find it too hard you can always stop.|||1) I bring my own food, or I make sure to go when I won't be hungry.

2) I don't like restaurants, they smell like dead animals!

3) Convert them. This takes time. My mom is starting to go vegan after I've been vegan for one and a half years! My sister became vegetarian a bit after I went vegan, and my dad usually is vegetarian. I'm working on it! If you can't do it, just make sure that what they eat doesn't smell like anything bad and encourage them to eat some vegan food more often.

4) Reading about animal suffering on farms. I know it is disturbing, but I just became disgusted by meat after a while.

5) I never gave into temptations, but once when I was lacto-ovo (I'm vegan now) I accidentally ate a yoghurt with gelatin in it! I was petrified, but I moved on and tried not to make that mistake again.

6) The hardest thing is being ridiculed for it! People don't always understand, and they can hurt your feelings. Another thing is that people usually don't realize that honey is not vegan.

But overall, it is worth it! To reduce animal suffering, to improve your health, and to help save the environment-- go for it!|||Hunger. Humiliation. Anger. Drowsiness. Bigger appetite. crankiness. More vulnerable to diseases since you're basically giving up essential fats that you get from meat and fish etc etc|||Hi

(1) Go to their kitchen %26amp; prepare something myself

(2) Fruit or salad - sometimes they have vegetarian options

(3) ?? I don't have that problem.

(4) Feeling a lot healthier

(5) Never

(6) ?? It was never hard - it easier day by day

How can a person be a pro-choice feminist and a vegetarian at the same time?

I'm seen some vegetarian feminist take a moral stance against eating animals on the grounds that killing is wrong. Yet they okay with folks killing fetuses. How can that be?How can a person be a pro-choice feminist and a vegetarian at the same time?
I'm feminist, pro-life, vegetarian, and anti death penalty. I don't like killing of any kind if it can be helped and have actually debated the subject with some other vegetarians who are pro-choice. As a result of becoming more spiritual I came to view zygotes, and fetuses as sentiment beings who have a right to life. I'm not radically pro-life but supporting abortions would have a negative effect on my conscience.
You don't have to be a feminist to be pro-choice. You could be desperate about an unwanted pregnancy. Women are used to dealing with menstruation - most aren't as squeamish as men. If the pregnancy is still in a stage where it is a cluster of cells rather than a baby, they would want the problem to go away. They don't regard it as killing.

By the way - how many vegetarian men persuade their partners to have an abortion? I don't think that being anti-meat has got anythng to do with it.How can a person be a pro-choice feminist and a vegetarian at the same time?
I am a pro-choice vegan.

I am a vegan because I think that non-human animals have the right to exist as is natural to them. I think that the slaughter industry is cruel and completely vile. It is also un-natural to consume animal products.

I am pro-choice because, while I think that abortion is wrong, I understand that to have a child that you don't want, or can't take care of is just as or more irresponsible than not knowing where babies come from in the first place, and taking adequate precautionary steps to prevent an unwanted pregnancy.

I also believe that if a woman cannot take care of herself during pregnancy (drug/alcohol addiction) she is automatically placing that child at risk, causing developmental, and health problems that could otherwise be avoided, automatically "altering" the natural existence of this child. Some women who have abortions got pregnant while they were using protection, as between 30-50% of abusive spouses/boyfriends tamper with their partner's birth control of choice. If a woman is raped, has medical issues/complex pregnancy that will harm her, I think abortion should be available. I also do not believe that adoption should always be considered a viable option. The foster and adoption systems in America are not really that good, and so many children are lost in the system, horribly abused and neglected. It is also true that young women under the age of 17 cannot obtain the morning after pill or plan B without a prescription or parental permission. I think more than a few abortions are performed on teen girls who were forced or coerced by their parents because they would rather end a life, than see shame in their home.

In general, I do not believe that abortion should be used as birth control, which is why I advocate for comprehensive sex ed including contraceptive use. It is naive of parents and educators to think that teenagers will not have sex, once a person hits puberty, their body is ready for sex and pregnancy. The best way to prevent unwanted pregnancy if you are sexually active, is to use birth control. It is true that teens WANT to know this information, and it is imperative that frank, open and honest discussions surrounding sexuality take place. If kids are prepared, and know the consequences of sex, they might choose not to have it until they are ready to deal with the consequences.

I also believe that because it takes two people to make a baby, two people should have a say as to whether or not they want to have that child. I do NOT think that it is the mother's choice alone to make. In the case of a disagreement, counseling services should be available. It is also okay for the man to waive consent to decide. Some men do not want to make that decision for their child's mother.

I really see abortion as a non-issue, because instead of debating about something that will always occur, even if it is illegal, we should focus on making things better for teen moms, low income parents, and children. We need better social support and more access to services that will help parents or expecting couples raise their baby the best way they can. I think that fewer people would have abortions if more people were properly educated as to how to prevent pregnancy, the foster and adoption systems were to be reformed, as well as there be better social supports and monies available to people that need them.
If it doesn't have a consciousness, it's not a person, it's a collection of cells... tasty, tasty cells. How can a person be a pro-choice feminist and a vegetarian at the same time?
As you can see from the above posters, people who are pro choice dont believe a fetus is a living being so thats how the rationalize slaughtering innocent babies.
these are two totally separate moral decisions

there is a huge deal of difference between killing animals to eat or wear

and choosing to not allow a pregnancy to progress
You think too much in black and white, stereotypes, labels and generalizations. It's ridiculous.
what hypocrites that they value a cow and chicken over a human. how dumb is that?
People like to eat, even the ones who are hypocrites.
They are two separate issues. And, even if it doesn't make sense to you - people are free to believe as they choose.
We're talking about people who don't have their priorities in order. I don't think I want to get inside their heads.
I don't rightly know. Is this a riddle or something?

Looking for some very easy and not to time consuming vegetarian dishes?

I'm young and i'm not to intelligent in the kitchen. I'm a semi veggie , but don't like to eat meat itself very often. Just looking for some quick easy and very healthy dishes for my diet, preferably lunches and dinners because i'm not a big breakfast eater when i actually do eat it(yes i've been to a natural pathic doctor and i know its the most important meal).Looking for some very easy and not to time consuming vegetarian dishes?
    Hey there,

I麓ve been a vegetarian since I was 2, so I know how you feel.

Well, it depends what kind of food you like. An easy option is to buy frozen vegetarian foods. Morning Star Farms has very good food. Most supermarkets have at least something.

Another option, if you are adventurous: fresh mozzarella, green beans, and potatoes with pesto. Buy the mozzarella, cook the green beans, Boil the potatoes until soft. Put on a plate and add sauce.

Lentils are another great food. Just google instructions.

Burritos: take a tortilla, spread refried beans on it. Then add any of the following: shredded cheese, corn, olives, lettuce, salsa, guacamole, rice, etc. Fold each side over. Microwave until completely hot, start with 1 min. add sour cream if you want.

Feel free to email me if you need other ideas.

    :)

Try Quorn stuff with salad. Quorn have loads of yummy, quick and easy vegetarian dinner foods, like veggie burgers or fillets. Completely vegetarian but with as much protein as a dish with chicken or beef, and most only take about 20 minutes to cook, just throw 'em in the oven n chop up some lettuce while you're a-waiting : )Looking for some very easy and not to time consuming vegetarian dishes?

I trying not to eat meat anymore because I think that eating meat meat is murder. I think that any vegetarian would agree with me there! But sometimes just sometimes I end up eating chicken. Can someone tell me how to avoid eating meat?

P.S. I would rather have a vegetarian person answer this question! It will make it easier for me. No hard feelings!Vegetarians only! I'm having a sort of hard time becomeing vegetarian. Can someone help me?
    Hi,

I have been a vegetarian for 5 years. I know what you mean about teh whole chicken thing. If you go to the frozen section of your grocery store, you will see vegetarian foods by Morningstar. Its amazing, they have chicken strips that you can fry up and they have cheeseburgers, and hot dogs and everything. It is all soy but it tastes just like meat!It is a little more expensive but its wonderful. If you dont eat meat for a little while, you will never want it. Visit www.peta.com and watch some of their videos, they will totally gross you out, but they will make you stop eating meat!

I'm not a vegetarian, but I will try to answer this anyway. Just do what overweight people do to stop themselves from eating the food they know they can't resist: Keep it out of your house, and keep away from it until you know you are past the point of not being able to resist temptation.Vegetarians only! I'm having a sort of hard time becomeing vegetarian. Can someone help me?
i recentyl decided to go vegetarian too, i stay away from meat by thinking that i would break like a personal record
Sometimes you try to do the best you can. that's all.Vegetarians only! I'm having a sort of hard time becomeing vegetarian. Can someone help me?
Well when ever I get in the mood for a hamburger which isnt as often as it use to be, I'd think about what happened to the animal and it made me feel bad enough not to eat it. Hope that helped.
Its not a question of what you don't eat, but what you do eat. I make a "burger" that I really like Boil 6 cups of water. Add garlic, onion Italian seasoning (to taste) 1 cup of sunflower seeds. add 6 cups of quick oats, and turn the heat off. Let it cool for about an hour. (until it is warm but comfortable to the touch) Form it into a large canning jar lid. You can use the flat for a top, or cut one from plastic. put it in a bowl of water between forming "patties". Place the rounds on a cookie sheet, and bake in the oven at 330 for about half an hour, turning once. I find that this is a substantial addition to a meal. Don't get stressed, figure out what you want to replace, then find a reasonable facsimile.
When i was a little girl, my parents bought my brother and i 2 cows 'as pets' so we'd help take care of them. when they grew up, my parents had them butchered........ needless to say, i became a vegetarian at that point...

    ANYWAYZ my suggestion is~

take an ENTIRE tour of a cattle butchering plant or any meat processing plant and maybe it'll change ya....
    Good question!

I recently read an article by a psychiatrist. In it he stated that when we veggies miss meat, we aren't actually missing the meat itself.

If we loved the meat so much, why do we cover it in veggies? BBQ sauce is just tomato. Oregano, basil, sage. Plants Plants Plants.

What we miss is the savoriness of it. So if you find yourself craving chicken, carve off a slab of your trusty tofu and marinate it in what you would normally put on your chicken.
Read the book skinny *****.. you'll never eat chicken again!!
    Don't Get Discouraged!!!

When I decided to go vegetarian it only lasted about 3 months the first time. About a month after that I went vegetarian again and I have been going strong for 3 1/2 years now.

What helped me a lot was Boca and Morning Star Farms. It makes it even easier to become vegetarian when you can substitute. Some of the different variates taste more like meat than others. You just have to try them and see which one is right for you.

You can also go out to restaurants and order almost any meal with out meat, or with a boca burger instead. Burger King offers the Morning Star Farms burgers.

I also subscribed to Vegetarian Times. They have great articles, and amazing recipes.
I'm vegetarian and the thought of meat actually turns my stomach. i think maybe you should give up. one person not eating meat doesn't stop the millions of animals being killed every day. don't get me wrong, you've got great ethics but if your craving maybe its not the thing for you....? maybe there's more suitable ways for you to voice your opinions
Morningstar and Quorn make good chicken substitutes (Quorn is phenomenal, but harder to find in some areas) for those times when you have a big craving.

If all else fails, you could also try a form of aversion therapy--when you want to eat meat, go online and find videos of animals in factory farms. There are a bunch out there at various sites like PETA and YouTube.
I've been vegan for about 16 years. The first 6 months were really hard. What worked for me was to keep meat out of the house like someone else said. You also need to branch out and find new things that you like. Be careful about just latching onto 'vegetarian' versions of foods you used to eat. You'll miss out on so many great things if fixate on meat substitutes all the time.

    Good luck!
I think it's great that you are going veg!

If you live with your parents, get them on your side about it. They buy the food and prepare it in most cases, and if they don't support you, they will keep preparing enticing meaty meals. If you can't get them to agree with you, get a friend who will be vegetarian with you. You can count on each other when temptation strikes.

Just find a lot of meat replacements and vegetarian recipes. Morningstar Farms makes excellent veggie corn dogs that are available in any grocery store. Gardenburger makes the best type of veggie burger that I've had so far, which is also available in any grocery store. A yummy and easy thing to make at home is a toastada, which is just a fried tortilla, vegetarian refried beans, lettuce, and cheese.

Trust me, being vegetarian isn't as hard as it seems and you won't even miss meat at all in a month or so!

Congratulations and good luck to you!
Well its not that hard, you have good thoughts so in a way that should be enough, the most important thing i guess is finding good recipes, you can get a few good vegetarian books and look them up on the internet,, once u start eating great vegetarian meals you will never look back , and also feel so much better,, it will just take time, but you will be better off in the long run :) good work
I have been a vegetarain for almost all my life if i were to eat beef,I would get sick fast.Try not to think about meat too much.
Eating a vegetarian diet is not only better for animals, it's also better for you.

I truly believe that if I eat a meat product, I am also taking in the memory and experience of that animal's death. I don't want to take in that trauma, because I believe I will feel it and carry it with me - perhaps even manifest it in my own behavior (aggression, depression, anxiety, etc.). That is my belief as to why I feel emotionally and physically better without meat in my diet.

Have hope, you will be increasingly more successful over time. Give yourself a short timeline as a vegetarian (like two weeks) and compare how you feel, in contrast to the last time you ate a meal with meat. All you need is to demonstrate to yourself how much better you feel without meat in your diet, and there will be your incentive to continue as a vegetarian.
I am not an animal rights activist and I used to dear hunt with my father when I was a little girl. I will not voice wether I think eating meat is right or wrong because that may take me all day and it is the choice of each individual to choose for himself/herself. What I will tell you is that .... the chickens eat what? grains, vegetation... as do cows and pigs and rabbits etc., we are getting those grains and vegetables second hand then aren't we? Thats what makes sense to me. Why eat it second hand when we can get it straight from where it comes from...? Do you see where Im going with this?

I am raising my little sister who had diabetes when I first gained custody of her and 4 years later she is no longer a diabetic due to our diet (the doctor said) and my 6 year old son who had severe asthma from 1 1/2 - 4 1/2 years old no longer has asthma problems ... we dont use any medication by the way... so eating healthy is the only thing I have changed in my life and as such my family and myself are in 100% full mental and physical health. Except for maybe my sister sometimes! Just a joke! So it's up to you to weigh the costs and measure the results. It's your life, your body, and ultimately your the one who makes the choice when you go out with friends or have dinner with relatives. I am the only one in my extended family who is Vegan. Trust me sister, I know how hard it can be. If you think its murder, than to you, thats what it is. Do you see what Im saying? Each one of us has to choose for ourselves. Its a daily choice, and you are the only one with the power to make that choice. You will succeed if thats what you choose to do! I hope I didnt offend anyone and I hope I helped you at least a little!

For any medicine you have take your food and then medicine. So as soon as you finish your food, take the medicine. Congrats for having become a vegetarian. There are lot of food items which are rich in all minerals and vitamins. You can use them in your daily food and gain energy.
if the vegetarian intakes fresh produce there's no need for synthetic supplements to compliment the diet.

Is there a certain time? I thought you could take it whenever you wanted just so it's once a day. Probably in the morning. Whatever time you decide to take it make sure you do it the same time everyday so that it becomes routine so you won't forget to take it. Good luck with becoming a vegetarian!

Vegetarian meals giving me gas and the runs?

I have a friend who is vegetarian and every time I eat a vegetarian meal it gives me gas as well as the runs.

What can I do about this?Vegetarian meals giving me gas and the runs?
Eat a more balanced vegetarian diet. Not eating meat won't give you "the runs" by itself.
stick to the meatVegetarian meals giving me gas and the runs?
don't eat that stuff anymore if you get sick
I guess your stomach is not used to eat it. You can ask your pharsmacist for over the counter medicines that help digest veggies. Maybe you lack some encyme. It happens to me too some times but with certain veggies. Cabbage, onions etc..

You should find out which ones make you feel uncomfortable and avoid them. I am sure carrots won't cause flatulence, neither potatoes. You could eat potatoes any style.

good luckVegetarian meals giving me gas and the runs?
Try Beano. Beano and there'll be no gas
It's because vegetarian meals are high in fiber, much more so than the McDonald's diet most Americans eat.

I doubt it's a lack of meat that's causing your diarrhea so the meal's being "vegetarian" can't be blamed.
I'm guessing you're used to eating crap and your body isn't used to getting the fiber it needs.
I'm assuming you eat beans then. The sugars in them aren't digestible. You could try peas instead. As for the 'runs,' it could be a number of causes. Eating more water/fiber than your body is accustomed to. Eating an offensive ingredient--like some peppers. It can even be caused by fruits/vegetables that weren't washed well enough.
Most people would say that vegetarian meals are easyer to digest, cause less bloating, and less gas. That is unless you are eating too many beans or something, beans are good for you but only in moderation. Personally I find mixing a protein (beans and other legumes, nuts, seeds) with a starch (rice, grain foods, potatoes etc) cause a slight discomfort and some bloating for a few hours after that meal. Or maybe you are not used to a high fiber diet. Remember fiber is used to help push along the digesting food scraping away debre along the walls, to help keep your stools from becoming hard and compact. If you are used to a diet low in fiber (meat, eggs, dairy products, white bread, white pasta or rice etc) Then you might have allot of trapped decaying food along your digestive tract, and then when you eat a meal high in fiber all the cr*p becomes dislodged and causes an upset in digestion, your body then does the right thing by washing it all out.

What can you do about it? I would say be happy that it is probably doing your body some good! (= Or cut back on the beans.
well since you can't take it... go back to eating meat.

let the vegetarianism to the brave.
You are probably eating to many beans. Beans can give you gas.
Don't eat vegetarian meals. Just be glad you aren't vegetarian/vegan because you would live with gas and the runs for the rest of your life.
Depends on what vegetarian foods that you eat.

  • What is a good vegetarian dinner meat eaters will enjoy?

I am making dinner Sunday night %26amp; I want to feed my family something they will like. I am the only vegetarian in my family and some times they decide to ask my questions like " are there even any good vegetarian dishes?". So i decided that instead of telling them, I want to show them.

Merci Beacoup : )What is a good vegetarian dinner meat eaters will enjoy?
I agree with Shady - you should definitely not use meat substitutes. It is not something that you can fool people with. Fake meats stand out like a sore thumb and few that are not accustomed to their generally unpleasant flavor will be put off.

Stick with hearty foods that stand on their own. Pizza Margherita is about as simple and delicious as it gets, and very popular in Italian restaurants. Serve with a salad of mixed greens with a balsamic vinagrette, such as the baby lettuces one can buy at any store in the plastic box.

Thirteen bean chili is the dish I turned to when the meat cravings struck. It is hearty and delicious. Omit the meat from the recipe below and it is just as good. My secret is to add a few good dashes of Liquid Smoke - that's what takes it over the top. Serve with cornbread and homemade coleslaw (or cooked greens) for a feast any fan of southern style cooking should enjoy.

One more of many fantastic possibilities is Italian lasagna or the Greek equivalent in Pastitso. I would try the latter for something different and relatively simple. Again you need only omit the meat, but you should add something to make up for the lack of it. I would recommend making more sauce along the line of an Italian lasagna, in addition to adding some more pasta and cheese. To save time and have equally good results, do not cook the pasta. Layer it on the bottom of the pan, cover with the red sauce mixture, then some cheese, and top with the white sauce (bechamel), followed by more cheese. Serve with garlic bread or just a good, very fresh baguette, tossed salad or maybe a Caprese salad, and a glass of your favorite wine. Good luck!
    Nice French :)

As a person who is not a vegetarian, I would recommend good meals that do not need meat. There are a lot of great foods out there without meat in them. Salads and soups are always good, and you don't need meat to make them! You could make a bean salad or something like that.

The only thing that I strongly do not recommend is using meat substitutes. I can tell the difference between a soy burger and a real burger without even thinking twice. (Ok, maybe not McDonald's) . Since your family knows that you're a vegetarian, they will know that you are using meat substitutes if you use them, and because they know it's not real meat, they will automatically decide not to like it.

There are a lot of food items out there that have nothing to do with meat. Take advantage of them! What is a good vegetarian dinner meat eaters will enjoy?
Italian food, French food! Soooooo many of their dishes do not use meat or fish! Just hit the library(or the web) and search for what you want. If you don't feel like it, then make a huge pan of cheese lasagna, with a huge salad, a vegetable plate, and hot garlic bread and butter.

Or you can make a thick soup with Great Northern beans, vegetable and tomato paste broth, pasta, basil and parsley, along with bread and salad.

Oh, or a Middle Eastern meal of pita pockets, hummus, tomatoes, cucumber slices, greens, and fresh fruits!

You can make all this really fast. Fruits and chocolates, or sherbert and gingersnaps for dessert.
One of my favourite vegetarian dishes is okonomiyaki (Japanese pancake based on deep fried mix of vegetables). I think it's mainly cabbage, but personally I like a bit of onions and carrots in there as well. Unfortunately I don't have a recipe, but I'm sure there are plenty around the web. It should be a relatively easy dish to make. It goes with a sauce and Japanese mayonnaise, but it's usually still good without.

Otherwise, pasta, pastry or cheese-based treats (e.g. lasagne with no meat but lots of layers, spinach and ricotta pastry/quiche, mozzarella cheese sticks, etc) should be alright. You could even go with veggie burgers. What is a good vegetarian dinner meat eaters will enjoy?
This is a very easy meal from one of my favorite vegetarian cookbooks. My family really loves it, so I'm sure yours will too! Not to mention that it's essentially a pie, so it's very kid friendly.

4 large potatoes, peeled, cut in quarters, cooked and mashed

2 small turnips, peeled, cut in chunks, cooked and mashed

2 beets boiled whole in their skins untill tender, then cooled, peeled, and sliced thinly

1 large onion sliced and sauteed in butter

approx. 1 cup of grated cheese

    1 tablespoon of butter

    1/2 cup of milk

    Directions:

    Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

Make a crust for a 9" covered pie. Roll out bottom crust and fit it into the 9" pie plate. Put half of the cheese over the bottom crust. Mix potatoes and turnips together and add the 1 tablespoon of butter and 1/2 cup of milk. Put half of this mixture into the pie crust. Mix all the beets and onions together and put on top of the potato and turnip mixture already in the pie plate. Then put the rest of the potato and turnip mix on and then add the rest of the cheese. Put the top crust on now. With a small knife cut a arrow head design on the crust so steam can escape (and it looks nice). Bake at 375 degrees for 35-40 minutes untill the crust is a golden brown color.
I'm not a vegetarian but I know that family sometimes just made a huge salad with almost every vegetable that you could think of. Then for my family we would cook stew meat and chicken to put on top or bacon, but you could always leave that off.or if you can cook it , just not eat it then cook that for them and leave it off your plate. I also heard that vegetarian lasagna is good. That might be an idea. I would just google something like vegetarian dishes for meat lovers. You might come up with something interesting. I am all about the internet and searching for the weirdest things. Just trying to help.
i recently lived with a family who, while we were eating, would say things like "my enchiladas are better, because they have CHICKEN in them!"

so.... I know how you feel.

however, i made this for them one night, and they all loved it.

shopping list: whole wheat tortillas, asparagus, mushrooms, onions, herbed goat cheese. (i don't know how many you're cooking for, but everyone will at least want one large or two small tortillas).

sautee the veggies in butter or oil. add herbs if you'd like, but it really doesn't need it.

while you're doing this, spread the goat cheese over the tortillas. when the veggies are ready, place them inside the tortillas. then, put the tortillas on a skillet, george foreman grill, griddle, etc. anything to brown the outside/toast them up a bit. and voila!

trust me they are super tasty and fulfilling. even to picky carnivores! :) hope this helps.
Well, Thai food is amazing. There are also some really delicious veggie sandwiches made with tofurkey and the like. You could also make some vegetarian sloppy joes, or pasta, with soy protein. I would try to include some soy protein so that they know they dont have to miss out on the meat experience completely, the texture can still be there. I hope you wow them!
you sound a lot like me. i'm the only vegetarian in my family as well. my family are pretty understanding but my boyfriend LOVES meat. ugh. Anyway he's coming to meet my parents for dinner and i am not going to change my ways because of him. So what i'm making for him is spaghetti and a nice salad. and maybe some bread.

It's really cheap, really filling, and you can put additives in like pesto, or roasted red peppers.

    Hope this helps
When we first became vegetarian, we would always make Mexican food for company. Salad, bean and cheese burritos, spanish rice, salsa, guacamole, refried beans, tostadas and tortilla chips. Drinks to match your guests. We always just had fruit punch. Nobody ever turned their nose up or went home hungry.

Cheese lasagna. Stuffed shells. Souffle (cheese or spinach). Sure, they're both a heck of a lot heavier than you're used to, but your family won't miss the meat.
Spaghetti, garlic bread, and a veggie filled salad. Everyone likes that.

    Hard times being a vegetarian...?

a couple of my guy friends pick on me cause i recently became a vegetarian. After being around two of my best friends, who are vegetarian, they have convinced me to become one. That weekend i was online reading stories and watching videos about animal proccessing plants and whatnot. They heard and thought that the only reason i became a vegetarian was because i watched thoses videos. it frustratese me to no end,but what should i say to them without losing them as friends?Hard times being a vegetarian...?
Ask them why it matters so much to them what you eat. It is really none of their business. Don't try to engage them in conversation about how vegetarianism is better, they will become defensive and not understand.

I usually just say something like "hey, we all get choices in life right? My choice is to be a vegetarian, and your choice is to eat meat. It's all good, and we are lucky to be living in a society where we have choices to accomidate both."
Tell them that it is your choice and if they are your friends they need to accept that- if not get more accepting friends.Hard times being a vegetarian...?
    get revenge
If their friendship means a lot to you, and if you respect these guys, there is really no need to say much about it. Stick with your choice, but try to remember you ate meat up until recently, and giving it up doesn't suddenly make you a Saint. They are probably waiting to see if you go back to eating meat, and think this is just a fad. You probably do have to prove your determination to them before they will accept it and leave it alone. There is no need for you to sit them down in front of PETA videos, hoping they will understand. Giving up meat takes an evolved mind, you are lucky to have 2 best friends who share your values, and your meat eating friends may think you look down on them for their choices. You may not be able to make them understand, but maybe you can make them leave it alone by treating it as a dietary choice, not a revolutionary one. As for them picking on you, they are just trying to be funny because they don't understand, and they will lose interest if you don't give a damn what they say. But if they wave meat in your face, feel free to knock it on the dirty ground, trust me, that will be the last time they do that.Hard times being a vegetarian...?
Tell them that you did not know until you watched the videos and read online, about what happens to factory-farm animals during their lives and at slaughter (a lot of cruelty), and now you know and don't want to eat meat anymore because of it.

How far along can someone call themselves a vegetarian?

When can somebody start calling themselves a vegetarian after some time of not eating meat? How far along can someone call themselves a vegetarian?
I think you can call your self a vegetarian the day you give up meat, as long as you are making a deliberate effort to no longer consume animal products. There is no set time stamp that you pass and "poof" you're now a vegetarian.

If you are committed to being a vegetarian, and no longer consuming meat, or slaughter by-products, you are considered a vegetarian.
After about a week they can say that they are not eating meat for suchandsuch reasons. After about a month and a half they can say "I am a vegetarian and you should be too!" But in all actuality you can call your self a vegetarian, a flabbergoober, a monster, and not actually do anything. it's a free country. But if you don't want people saying that you haven't really commited yet, wait. How far along can someone call themselves a vegetarian?
    i don't really know

but i think if you don't eat meat for about a month that you did not eat meat than you can call yourself a vegetarian
i called my self a vegi. the day i didn't order a steak at a steak house. eating meat sickens me... watch for those of you crule people....http://video.google.com/videosearch?hl=e鈥?/a>How far along can someone call themselves a vegetarian?
Um... When ever they want... I said i was going vegan the day i started... A week later i said i was vegan... Takes a week for the meat to completely leave your system so i took it a week...
A week probably. I said that i was going vegetarian, and then it just trickled out to "I am a vegetarian".
I found it easier to say that "I have switched eating habits to a vegetarian diet." I had to tell my boss, as she was inviting me for dinner the same day I made the change. To announce I was a vegetarian sounded a little unbelievable.
As soon as you stop eating meat I think, if you are committed to staying vegetarian.
As soon as you quit eating meat, and make the decision not to eat meat in the future, you are a vegetarian.
i am not sure, being a vegetarian doesn't make you any better.

it is not pleasurable being biased toward any living thing.

    it's all about being fair.

consuming plants only or more is in no way beneficial to the environment. all it does is create an imbalance.

i am neither selfish of my choice of foods to base it on personal benefits.

everything is to be done in moderation.

we are to accommodate everything on earth without to enjoy the best of it.

we are not to judge the degree of importance but respect it.
As soon as your Veggie ID card arrives - just kidding :-)

Being a vegetarian is a life style choice so the minute you decided to give up meat you became a vegetarian.
as soon as you decide to not eat meat ever again.
3 months i think becuase by that time you can be sure like it during those months you were craving meat and such then i wouldn't be calling myself a vegetarian but if you havn't then you're good and finally you can tell people that you are a vegetarian

How hard is it to go from vegetarian to vegan?

I've been vegetarian for some time now.. and the other day i realized that even tho i wasn't eating meat i wasn't helping their cause soo help a girl out, please and thanks

EmilyHow hard is it to go from vegetarian to vegan?
    Depends on the person.

I went straight from Eating meat to being vegan 3 months ago and never looked back
I had no trouble going from vegetarian to vegan, once I realized that that was an option. I just stopped using animal products.I found substitutes for things like honey, eggs, and cheese. At first, I did a lot of processed foods, but then I found it easier to make my own, simply because I could control the ingredients and also the cost.

I think that one of the main stumbling blocks, if you are eating packaged processed foods, is learning to read the ingredients listings, and learning what those words mean, so that you can be sure you are avoiding animal products (for instance, I found a lot of so-called vegan cheese actually used milk protein -- I could actually smell it!)How hard is it to go from vegetarian to vegan?
It's a lot easier than you think. You can do the vegan 30 day challenge just to try it and go from there.

Also, if you are not eating meat, you are *definately* helping the cause! Just by making the choice to avoid animals as food, you are reducing the demand for meat and saving the lives of animals. Each time you choose vegetarian food over eating flesh is a contribution. If you can do more, that's great, too!

If you feel you aren't doing enough, then maybe it is time for you to go to a vegan diet.

Pay attention to the foods you eat, making sure to include foods containing Vitamins D and B12, as well as calcium and iron. If your diet is not well-rounded, taking a daily multivitamin supplement with minerals may be a good idea. You could ask a dietician or even your primary care physician whether a supplement is needed, considering the foods that you eat.

If you want to do more than change what you eat, there are other ways to get involved in animal rights activities. You could pass out leaflets at a local university, write letters to companies encouraging them to offer more vegan choices in products, donate vegan cookbooks to your local library, the possibilities are limitless. The PETA website can give you ideas and help you get started if you're interested.
    I'm with Grimm here

I went from eating meat and dairy products/eggs to vegan. it's been four months now and I did not struggle with anything really.

(as for the people saying it's too hard and expensive........um, I'm broke and I can still make it lol).

just don't buy processed foods, that's where it zaps the money away from you.

maybe later when I have the money I'll buy vegan cheeses or cookies galore :)

but for the time being, I am doing just fine without that stuff.

just switch to other yummy milk alternatives for the dairy. (I loooove almond and rice milk)

and cheese you'll learn to live without...it makes the food taste better that way imo.

and eggs...well I never was that much of a fan of eggs for breakfast so I wasn't missing out on a lot.

I heard tofu scramble is good.

and if you are going by a recipe that calls for eggs, there's plenty of other things you can use.How hard is it to go from vegetarian to vegan?
I would recommend talking to your nutritionist about becoming a vegan before actually becoming one. One of the major concerns of a vegan diet is the lack of calcium and vitamin D for your bones. Calcium is mostly found in dairy products while Vitamin D is found in many fatty fishes and eggs.
There is always going to be that one vice that people have a tough time with. Whether it be yohghurt, ice cream or cheese. Cut that first, find a good alternative. After you have figures out how to live without your favorites, the rest is gravy...delicious mushroom gravy.

I am not sure how vegan is more expensive. I am a vegan and feeding myself is pretty cheap. I live off whole grains, vegetables, beans, nuts and seeds. All of which are remarkably cheap. You can get a pound of beans for $1.00.
I say, if you have the money and the resources then it's easy, but you can't be vegan and poor..trust me i've tried. Some ppl say that if you really love the earth you'll be vegan no matter what (The book: skinny *********) but i'll put it out there, vegan is expensive, it's a fact, and i'd love to go vegan but i just got a ten dollar pay check, so what do you think i'm gonna be, vegetarian or vegan? But the funny thing is, the more we buy it, the more available and cheap it is...haha. I will give you all the websites and products that are vegan:

It's really not hard at all. Instead of going to a normal grocery store just go to Wholefoods market or trader joes, and instead of drinking cow milk drink soy milk, and instead of buying cheese with cow milk buy cheese with soy milk. Are you following me? It's really easy nowadays, they even make ice cream out of soy milk.
I know a few vegans and they easily made a change. You just have to make sure you replace what you're missing out on (lots of soy milk, vegan-friendly foods and they even have vegan ice cream!) From what I've heard its not too hard as long as you have the will :) Good luck !
    I'm a vegetarian too.

May i just make a suggestion; have you considered buying free range produce instead, the animals have a cruelty free live.

And one other thing, if no one ate anything dariy related we wouldnt have a need for cows and chickens would we?

  • Iron and Omega 3 sources for vegetarian?

I want to turn vegetarian. I'm already anaemic. I've already started to eat some iron-rich food like dates and prunes. But I'm unsure of omega 3 sources. In the internet, the explanation is kinda complicated...'ALA omega' what nots!

What should I eat? Do tofu and soya stuff really help?

Advice from long-time vegetarian and medical practitioners perhaps.

Thanks!Iron and Omega 3 sources for vegetarian?
In addition to flaxseed, omega 3's are abundant in walnuts. A quarter cup or small handful contains about 94% of the daily recommended value. As for iron, soy, many beans and legumes (especially lentils), and seeds like sesame and pumpkin are rich in the mineral. I tend to get mine mostly from the latter (leafy greens like collards as well) as I follow a mostly raw vegan diet, but do what feels best for your body and try to eat as varied a diet as possible. Best of luck and vibrant health to you.
For omega 3, seeds and nuts

Iron, spinnich, tofu, legumes, beans, lentils, etcIron and Omega 3 sources for vegetarian?
Omega 3s: flaxseeds. I usually sprinkle them on top of cereal/ oatmeal, or bake them into breads, muffins, etc. You should grind them (or buy them preground) before using them so they will be absorbed into your body.

Iron: whole grains, dark green vegetables (broccoli, kale, string peas, chard), legumes (beans, lentils), soy foods (soybeans/edamame, tofu, tempeh, soy milk products), nuts and seeds (especially tahini and almond butter), dried fruits (raisins, apricots, figs), and blackstrap molasses.

    Good luck, you'll be fine!
Try and get this in a health store near you http://www.nutrimaxorganic.com/salus/sal鈥?/a> (all health stores have this, or at least something similar). It's a NATURAL iron and vitamin supplement. I too was anemic so started taking the supplement (twice a day before meals) and I've seen a difference, and my iron levels returned to normal. I take it every day now since it's natural it can't do any harm. Google it and you'll find positive reviews on it too.

Also try having stuff like spinach on your sandwich (if you have it with wafer-thin Quorn 'ham' slices, and have lettuce cucumber etc with it, you can't taste the spinach). Spinach is very strong tasting and some people don't like it, so hiding it like that masks the taste.

This is what I have on my sandwiches - http://www.quorn.co.uk/products/Deli_Waf鈥?/a> it's really yummy and tastes like real ham.

This site has a great article on Omega 3 http://www.vegsoc.org/info/omega3.html

I hope this helps and thanks for becoming vegetarian :)Iron and Omega 3 sources for vegetarian?
If you're already anemic, perhaps you should consider getting that under control before going veg?

I'm All for going veg. 110%. But - if you already are anemic and then became veg and got sick - guess what everyone's going to say - Seeee you can't become veg, you'll get sick..it will make you anemic...See I knew this person who went veg and got sick and became anemic...etc etc etc

re: omegas...you can use hemp/flax/walnuts or Udo's oil...or you can take DHA/EPA supplements (sourced from algae with a veg-cap)...

Flax (for instance) has ALAs. Your body converts ALA to DHA and EPA. The end result is the same. DHA/EPA supplements can be taken by those whose bodies don't do the conversion as well, or who simply wish to skip an extra step.

Can I be a vegetarian and be a body builder at the same time?

I was wondering if I could gain a lot of muscle and be a vegetarian at the same time, because I want to be healthier, but I am also trying to gain muscle mass. Can I be a vegetarian and be a body builder at the same time?
Yes..... beans are full of protien.... meat is not the only source of protien... there are plenty more than enough foods that you can get your protien from besides meat.

Its important that you eat the right things example tofu is a nice meat alternative.

A big Recipes Book for Vegetarians is on the sorce that i added. Can I be a vegetarian and be a body builder at the same time?
My brother is a body builder and he would tell you it's much harder to build muscle without the protein meat contains. You could fork out a bit of money and have lots of protein powder as a substitute but hi protein meat is better.
Muscle mass comes usually from protein and that usually comes from meat.Go to a health food or vitamin store and ask them what to do.They may have a protein drink for vegetarians made from whey protein. Can I be a vegetarian and be a body builder at the same time?
You can. In fact vegetables are very healthy for building muscles.

be sure to drink lots of milk and eat legumes like peanuts and walnuts to get your iron and protein.

    You can also eat broccoli.
Yeah of course just make sure you're getting high amounts Of protein a day. Protein powder like whey or mass peak are good.
    are you stupid?

    of course...

vegetarians over all are healthier in every way than ones who eat meat all the time.

Is it normal to feel sick after eating vegetarian sausage for the first time?

This morning me and my sisters bought veggie sausage by mistake and didn't realize till we got home. We didn't think it was much different so we cooked it and ate it.

Well since then we've all felt sick to the stomach. My youngest sister's went away after a while, I still have mine, but my oldest sister feels the worst.

Is this a normal reaction to eating vegetarian sausage for the first time? Any idea when the pain might go away?Is it normal to feel sick after eating vegetarian sausage for the first time?
you shouldn't feel anymore sick eating a vegetarian sausage than a normal sausage. are you sure you cooked them properly? could it just be something else you've eaten? or a sickness bug that you've all caught?
I've never had a reaction like that, but still I'm not surprised. You probably have gas. Try Gas-X or something similar. Fake vegetarian 'meat' isn't really good for you. I think it contains a lot of isolated soy protein (which might be linked to cancer) and artificial flavor enhancers (might cause headaches just for one possibility). Being vegetarian is a healthy choice as long as you eat whole foods and stay away from heavily processed stuff. Vegetarian sausage is heavily processed. It's a science experiment. Is it normal to feel sick after eating vegetarian sausage for the first time?
Just my opinion, but vegietarian "meats" are just not good for eating. I like my veggies to be veggies and my meats to be meats. I tried those veggie sausages once and felt horrible for the whole day until they made their grand and gut wrenching exit. You'll be ok soon enough.
Im presuming you ate some kind of sausage with like TVP in it... that stuff always gives me a stomach ache and I have been told its not a healthy way of getting protein. But regardless, yeah it is normal. I remember the first time I tried that it made my stomach upset for a day.Is it normal to feel sick after eating vegetarian sausage for the first time?
It sounds like you might have food poisoning, which can happen with all different kinds of foods. Maybe it's because you were supposed to cook the veggie sausage differently from normal sausage, but it's probably just bad luck. You should feel better soon.
you might have gotten an expired one.

or it could have been something else you both ate. I'm assuming you ate it for breakfast, so maybe the eggs were bad? or moldy bread.

you will be fine, it will go away soon. just don't think about it

    :)
no its not normal, you may be intolerant to gluten.
You could have a minor sensitivity to soy or gluten if that's what's in it

I want to be and stay vegetarian, but my family and friends pressure me to eat meat. How do I just say 'NO'?

I live in southern georgia and I don't exactly know myself yet but I know that meat is murder. My family doesn't understand and every time I try to vegetarian they pressure me to change. Some times even to a point of tricking me. I can't stand having to cook the meat or see it being cooked. How do I just say no to them?I want to be and stay vegetarian, but my family and friends pressure me to eat meat. How do I just say 'NO'?
dont make it a big deal. the bigger deal you make it the bigger deal it stays. just keep saying no. eventually it will be accepted or youll be on your own and can cook for yourself.
Go with your mom, or dad or whoever does the food shopping in your house, and buy fruits and vegetables and nuts and beans. Tell them that you are going to cook for yourself. And once a week offer to cook for them and make them something extra delicious so they can see how yummy vegetarian/vegan food can be. Print out websites and highlight and show them all of the benefits(environmental and health) of being vegetarian/vegan. Tell them that this is something you truly stand for and that you can't stand to look at yourself in the mirror if you eat meat. That's how I felt and that's what I did and now I'm a vegan and my parents are actually proud of everything I've done and how much will power I have. And my father cooks for me now.I want to be and stay vegetarian, but my family and friends pressure me to eat meat. How do I just say 'NO'?
I would definitely say rude comments often back to them...such as..."you people are sick for eating that..." and "that smells so gross when you cook that..." or "that used to breathe, you know... its making me nauseous." that would become so annoying and negative they might just stop being turds to you!
i have the same problem well the best you can do is say no and so they don't trick you in to eating meat their like tv dinners 4 vegetarian they have vegy burgers in them and beans ect and their vacum backed and sealed so if its open or tampered with you know not to eat itI want to be and stay vegetarian, but my family and friends pressure me to eat meat. How do I just say 'NO'?
    Just say it.

    NO!

And tell them it's your personal choice.

Then, you can list out the benefits of being vegetarian, such as red meat causes more anger, and vegetarian food is more healthy etc.

    If they still pressurise you

then you can either refuse to eat, or get your own food.

Sooner or later they will accept our choice.
Show them "Meet Your Meat" video and tell them you don't like to kill animals for food.

    http://www.goveg.com/factoryFarming.asp
I'm sorry that your family is not more supportive. Maybe you can explain to them the health benefits of vegetarianism, or come up with good intelligent responses to their arguments. If you don't trust them to cook for you maybe you can start cooking for yourself a bit more, or help them in the kitchen so you can keep an eye on them. Remember that if it's too difficult and you find yourself compromising, you can eat whatever you want when you move out, and they can't do a thing about it!

Will I lose weight if I become a part time vegetarian?

I still like meat. please no lectures. I just am trying to lose weight and I thought maybe if during the week i don't eat any meat and on the weekend i have a treat that has meat in it. but will i lose weight from being a vegetarian? please and thank youWill I lose weight if I become a part time vegetarian?
That would help a little but this should definately help and you still could eat some meat:

    1) Eat several small meals a day (no large meals: don't eat 2-3 big meals). This helps your metabolism. When you only eat a couple times a day your body gets hungry and saves all the fats and sugars from what you eat opposed to eating several times. When you eat more often during a day your body knows it will get food soon so it doesn't bother keeping the unwanted materials in food.

    2) Excercise 1 hour a day or more by doing curl-ups/sit-ups and use a treadmill or just run/jog for 5 minutes then walk for 10 and run/jog for 5 and keep doing this for about 30 minutes or so.

    3) Don't eat chocolates and chips or anything with a lot of trans fat.

This should help to lose any unwanted weight. Good Luck and I hope this helped! Will I lose weight if I become a part time vegetarian?
yes , because meat is practically full fat product

as long as u dont fill up on cookies and chips instedWill I lose weight if I become a part time vegetarian?
It's very possible you will since vegetables do have lower calories and fat in them. But don't substitution the meat with bad carbs like pasta or it will not work. Also plan on taking vitamins since there are some things in meat that your body needs. Good luck!
It depends on what you are eating. There are lots of vegetarian, and even vegan, items that really aren't good for you. If you are eating lots of sugar, oil, pasta/rice/bread, then it isn't going to be helpful at all.

From a weight standpoint tofu/seitan=chicken/beef. It depends on how you cook it. Deep fried falafel is just as bad as fried chicken. In general, dairy is terrible for you in any way.

Some pointers: don't deep fry anything. Bake it instead. Limit amounts of oil. Some fats are better than others.

Fattening salad dressings negate the purpose of salad.

Limit all types of dairy. It is delicious, but fattening with many health risks.

Spinach=iron. Spinach salads are very good--especially with strawberries.

    Mushrooms have vitamin D.

Beans can be an excellent source of protein. Eat them with or on the same day you eat a starch (pasta, rice, bread) so they are a complete proetin.

Steak, turkey, fish, bacon, pork chops, eggs, tenderloin, burgers, chicken, lamb, pepperoni, shrimp, roast beef, roast beast, green eggs, stew, and lobster are all things you can eat as long as you see the words FAUX or TOFU in front of it.

I am a vegan, too and there are millions of things, delicious and not, that you can find online and in cookbooks. Start with sauteed fennel bulbs with feta.

    yum
There are many foods that are made of tofu/vegetables and taste like the real thing. I know that Morningstar Farms has a lot of vegetarian "meats" such as veggie burgers, "chicken", "ribs", "meatballs", and much more! you can also have anything that doesn't have any hidden non-vegetarian ingredients such as:

Cochineal/Carmine - a coloring agent made from ground up beetles

Oleic acid - fat from sheep or cattle

    Rennin/Rennet - enzymes from a calf's stomach

Calcium Stearate - a mineral usually derived from hogs and cattle

Gelatin - protein from animal bones, cartilage, tendons, and skin

Glycerides (mono/di/tri) - glycerol from animal fats

Stearic acid - animal fats and oils

Lecithin - phospholipids often from animal tissues and eggs

Pepsin - enzymes gathered from pigs stomachsI'm a vegetarian ,what all foods can I eat?
Just don't eat Jell-o. That's not vegetarian. Also don't eat things that contain gelatin. A lot of yogurt is not vegetarian because they contain gelatin. Organic yogurts usually don't though. Marshmallows have gelatin in them so they are not vegetarian.

Lard is not vegetarian and is contained in some chips and desserts.

Also McDonald's fries contain beef tallow. Those are the most common "mistake-foods" that veggies go for without realizing.
it depends, what kind ofvegitarian are you? lacto ( drinks milk but does not eat egges), Ova ( eats eggs but not milk), lacto-ova (eats both), or vegan ( eats noo animal products at all). There are a couple of other kinds too. but most likely if you are a lacto-ova like me then you should always check labels ! sometimes companys will use beef fat or gelatin in products and if you dont check the lables then you could be eatting meat products with out knowing itI'm a vegetarian ,what all foods can I eat?
Don't forget to eat fruit here and there. You can pretty much eat whatever you want that doesn't have gelatin, poultry, fish, meat, and rennet there is some other stuff but at this moment i'm at a blank to think of what.
Don't forget the fruit. Make sure you get enough vitamins and protein. Sounds like you are doing good.
    rice, fruit, eggs also

My favourite is Falafel, its from the middle east and is kind of like a vegie patty, Ball shape, fried in oil, and is made mainly from crushed chick peas and parsley, Alot of vegetarians buy it ready from a lebanese restaurant or kebab shop, They mainly eat it in a sandwich (Pita Bread) with salad, or you can eat it on its own with a tahini sauce next to it

(sesame sauce). Here is a recipe for you:

Ok, I absolutely love www.vegcooking.com because they have amazing recipies for just about any ocassion and they're very easy, too!

Here's one of my very favorites:

    Creamy Chive Mashed Potatoes

Rich mashed potatoes are the perfect side dish for most meals.

    5 large potatoes, diced

1 cup liquid nondairy creamer (try Silk brand)

    2 Tbsp. margarine

    1/4 cup fresh chives, chopped

    Salt and pepper, to taste

鈥?Place the potatoes in a large pot and cover with water. Bring to a boil and cook for 20 minutes.

鈥?Drain the potatoes, place in a bowl with the remaining ingredients, and mix until smooth.

    鈥?Serve hot.

    Makes 4 to 5 servings

And also these things are really delicious:

    Buffalo Wing-Style 'Chicken'

If you want more heat from this dish, add cayenne pepper to the Shake-n-Bake mix. Serve it with vegan ranch dressing.

1 roll Chickettes, torn into chunky pieces

1 pkg. Shake-n-Bake Buffalo wing coating powder

1/4 cup vegetable oil (for low-fat version, use 1 or 2 Tbsp. of water or soy milk)

鈥?Put the Chickette pieces in the Shake-n-Bake plastic bag.

鈥?Pour in the oil and shake to coat. Add the coating powder and shake again.

鈥?Dump the nuggets onto a nonstick cookie sheet and bake for 20 minutes at 350掳F.

    鈥?Serve hot.

    Makes 4 servings

You can find great tips and recipies, as well as watch informative videos and plan two weeks of veg*n meals.
