Im a vegetarian, and cant take pills i've almost passed out a few times because my iron was so low.?

what are some iron rich vegetarian foods that are easy to get and work with a budget. preferably something that is easy to prepare as well. any ideas?Im a vegetarian, and cant take pills i've almost passed out a few times because my iron was so low.?
Try to get a bag of fresh spinach leaves. These are awesome just to eat out of the bag. They are high in iron.

Kidney beans and lentils are also good sources.

For fruits, dried apricots, avocadoes, raisins, dates, figs and prunes.
I have read that cooking in a cast iron pot of frying pan helps supply the body with iron.Im a vegetarian, and cant take pills i've almost passed out a few times because my iron was so low.?
Peanut butter, spinach, swiss chard, all kinds of beans, broccoli , sunflower seeds. Cereals that are fortified...

There are many foods that fit the bill. You also might consider getting a case of Ensure until you learn how to keep your diet balanced. Being anemic is no laughing matter.

You are also going to have to make sure you get enough vitamin C so that you can absorb the iron properly.
Try Cream of Wheat (one serving of Cream of Wheat supplies nearly half of the daily value of iron.) Eat lots of beans and green leafy vegetables. Total cereal also has a lot of Iron.

You could also take children vitamin supplements like Flinstones gummies.Im a vegetarian, and cant take pills i've almost passed out a few times because my iron was so low.?
Eating fortified foods like cereal help. Make sur you eat cirtus fruits like oranges as they help iron absorption. Cooking in cast IRON cookware helps too! Trace amounts of iron will get it into the food and absorbed by your body.

It sounds like you might be really anaemic, you must take supplements as just food intake will not be enough at this stage.

Good luck get better soon
if your a vegetarian like me then i think egg is good.

i checked it up, and im right - its got iron.....
Here are some vegetarian foods that are high in iron:

Black beans, bran flakes, cashews, Cream of Wheat, garbanzo beans (chickpeas), GrapeNuts, kidney beans, lentils, navy beans, oatmeal, pumpkin seeds, raisins, soybeans, soymilk, spinach, sunflower seeds, tofu, tomato juice, and whole wheat bread.

Eating vitamin C-rich foods (like citrus fruits and peppers) when you eat iron-rich foods is a good way to increase iron absorption.

Also, I'm not sure how old you are, but it's a good idea for both omnivorous and vegetarian young women to take a multivitamin that contains iron. Young women tend to have higher rates of anemia compared to the overall population.

Good luck.
Green leafy veges are quite inexpensive.

Why can't you take pills??

**
spinach comes to mind first. you can buy it frozen or fresh and have it either cooked or in a salad. if your iron is low you need to make sure your getting a VARIETY of fruits and vegetables and protein. having alittle broccoli everyday won't be enough, you have to incorporate a lot of greens, fruits, beans, etc.
Dark green leafy vegetables, beans and legumes (peanuts), peanut butter, and if okay with your diet, fortified cereals (check labels) and if you are old enough, dark beer

If it persists for more than a week ,could be a symptom of something more serious. See a doc.
green leafys!!! VERY high in iron.. get 'em anyway you can tolerate em..

pssst.. here's a hint.. I make these smoothies out of crushed ice, orange juice, pineapple juice, banana, KALE and SPINACH!! YeS!! believe it or not, if done right, all you taste is the bananna/pineapple/orange.. don't taste the greens at all.. you just have to experiment with the right amounts. (Course it looks green and nasty LOL)

It's how I, as a vegetarian who hates vegetables, get my vegetables in my diet LOL!!

raisins and prunes and grape juice have some iron too, if you're in a snacking mood!! (for some reason I always CRAVE raisins at "that time of month"
The vegetarian food which is highest in iron per 100g is, surprisingly, dried apricots.

There's a list available from the Vegetarian Society, here: http://www.vegsoc.org/info/iron.html
I am very anemic too, and I can sure you there's no othey way to treat this then iron pills/syrup. The doctors told me so, I learned it on the university too and I also experienced it. There is no possible reason to dont take those pills even if you are veggie, I know that in the first days you will feel sick in a stomach, but it will pass afterwards. The first results of the pills will be experienced after 2 weeks, but to completly fill your depos of iron you have to take it for 6 months.
If you know you are anemic, I would talk to a doctor about iron supplements.

There is one you can only get with a prescription that is supposed to be easy on the stomach.

You can also add Floradix to your diet. It's a liquid iron which is very easy on the stomach and readily absorbed by the body.

Start cooking with cast iron pans and use acidic foods when you do as much as possible like lemons, tomatoes and apples. The acid in those foods (and other acidic foods) will help to leach a lot of iron from the pan into your meal without effecting the taste of your food.

Green and black teas and coffee are iron inhibitors, so be sure to drink those beverages either one hour before or two hours after an iron rich meal or taking an iron supplement.

A lot of calcium in a meal can also inhibit iron absorption as does taking any Proton Pump Inhibitors (such as Nexium, Prevacid etc.).

On the other hand, anything rich in vitamin C helps iron absorption.

If I were you, I would get as educated about anemia and the science of iron absorption as you can.

Iron is one of the most difficult compounds for the body to absorb.

Make sure you take a mulitvitamin with iron every day.

Be sure, however, to see a doctor to find out what your iron level actually is and how much supplementation if any may be needed. Your iron level may be in a range where with proper diet you can get your iron back up to a normal level.

But, I can't emphasize enough to do start doing research on the subject.

A note about spinach. It may contain iron, but it also contains oxalic acid which inhibits iron absorption. If you eat spinach for the iron, be sure to eat it with tomatoes or bell peppers, both of which are high in vitamin C and will help your body absorb the iron.
