How do I tell my parents I am becoming a vegetarian?

My main problem here, is that my Dad makes steak and fish all the time. We practically have nothing else for dinner, and I know he's not going to be happy about this. I've already been avoiding meat and gelatin products everywhere else, just not at dinner. It doesn't help that my parents have NEVER been supportive of my decisions. However, this means A LOT to me.

I'm 16. %26amp; I don't have my license or a job.

How should I tell them? How did you tell your parents you were going vegan/vegetarian? How'd they react? How do I tell my parents I am becoming a vegetarian?
Technically, the best you can hope for is that they will be supportive of your decision, buy you the foods you need, and maybe even help teach you how to maintain a balanced vegetarian diet.

But realistically speaking, it is more likely that you may need to suffer through months or years of bitterness and mocking before your parents accept your choice. The good news is you'll be going to college in a year or two and then you can live your own life. Understanding that, here is what I suggest you do.

1) Don't make your parents change the way they eat or in any way suggest that how they choose to eat is wrong.

2) Tell your parents that you'll go shopping with them to choose the foods that you want to eat, and that you will prepare them yourself. Make it clear that you are more than willing to share the foods you cook with them.

3) Explain exactly why you are making this choice. Don't show any disappointment in how they raised and fed you.

Good luck! If you have any more questions, contact me. I've gone through what you're worried about, so you can learn from my mistakes.
Actually, I'm kind of selfish about certain things, and I didn't tell them.

When they made meat for dinner, I just politely refused, until they understood my decision.

Your parents will accept you eventually. You have to sit them down and tell them WHY you want to become vegetarian, and if they don't understand, at least you tried, right?

Figure out if it's more important for you to make your parents happy or do what's best for many more living creatures. How do I tell my parents I am becoming a vegetarian?

Just tell them- simply blurt it out.

Doing difficult things is almost always easier than the fretting about having to do them.
Well, I would start by doing a great deal of research because knowledge is power. In order to win any debate you have to have good hard facts and details. You have to know why your want to be a Vegetarian and why it means so much to you. You also have to be prepared for your parents concerns as to why they will not support you. So be prepared for their reaction and come back with a solution as to why their concern will not be a problem. For example if they say it is too inconvenient to serve you a separate Vegetarian meal then be ready to counter with no, it is not because I can microwave my own Vegetarian meat replacement and eat everything else that everyone else is eating or whatever you plan to do for your meal. Another concern your parents may have is the common misconception about a Vitamin deficiency which is not a problem either. So if that is their concern then tell them that you can take a multivitamin and B12 supplement. I will also post links in the source area below which will give you information on Vegetarian nutrition. Some people believe that you have to eat meat and dairy in order to get adequate protein in your diet which is a load of crap. You get more than enough protein from Beans, Lentils, Tofu, peanut butter, and the list goes on and on. Just show them that you have carefully researched and thought your decision through. Be prepared to make dinner easy on them by deciding on how to tweek the meal so that everyone will be happy. For example, if they are having Hamburgers and french fries you can microwave a Boca Burger for yourself. If they are having spaghetti you can warm up some Marinana sauce for your pasta intead of eating the meat sauce. If they are having steak and potatoes you can warm up a Gardien product for yourself instead of steak. If they are having fish you can warm up a Boca Spicy chicken patty and make a veggie chicken sandwich. If you want to sell an idea to anyone you have to show the person the benefits of the idea. If possible show your parents how your becoming a Vegetarian will help you and maybe even them as well. Tell them that you are 16 and that you need practice in the decision making process. Tell them it will not be fair to you if you have to wait until your are 18 to make any decisions. You are 16 now and they need to start trusting your judgement. Show them how eating Vegetarian helps save the planet from global warming. Tell them that if everyone ate a Vegan diet that it would end world hunger. Show them as many benefits as possible to support your decision to become a Vegetarian. Just educate yourself and be ready to counter them when they try to squash your decision to become a Vegetarian. I will post some links that I think may help you sell your decision to your family.
