I've always wanted to try to be a vegetarian, but I've never really been able to because my mom cooks mostly meats for dinner. Now that its summer, I think it's the perfect time to try and become one. I know it won't be easy, and I'll be cooking most of my meals by myself, but I was just wondering if anyone had any tips on getting started, so-to-speak?How should I go about becoming a vegetarian?
There is a great site for people starting out and people who are new. It's called vegetariantimes.com They even have a camp vegetarian where they send you through your email hundreds of tips, questions and answers, recipes, everything you need. They are extremely helpful and want you to succeed. Do yourself a favor and sit down with your mother and explain your choices and ask her to help you. She will probably love to help you with dinners and special shopping. Let her see that site I told you about. There are also sites she can check is she is worried about your nutrition. There are sites for that also. Just type in teens and vegetarianism for a starter. I'm guessing your a teen, hope I'm right on that. You may be surprised that mom can get in on these foods too, once she sees how healthy and wholesome they are. Her cooking doesn't have to change much, you can probably eat most of the same things, just avoid the meats. If she's cooking meats, she's also probably making veggies and potatoes you can eat as well. And I'm sure she makes pasta, which you can eat. If she's using meat sauce, just takes yours out before the sauce is put on and make yours primavera. Vegetarianism isn't a big deal, you'll find you can work around foods that are already being served at your home.
As Lissy mentions its really important to replace the protein that you will lose by not eating meat. peanut butter will provide you with protein but there are other ways to replace what you're missing.
If you are still going to eat fish then its a good source of protein and omega 3. If not, try eating lentils, pulses and various beans. Lentils and pulses can be used to make stews, soups, curries; just chuck in plenty of fresh veg and what ever herbs and spices you prefer. You can make meat free chilli with mixed beans, chickpeas are great in curries and you can make home made pate with butter beans and garlic. There are also loads of great "fake meat" products about, quorn products are usually really nice, although wont really taste like meat.
In the summer you can make mixed veg kebabs served with cous cous or quinoa (a great source of protein, fibre, magnesium and iron) falafel, salads with mixed nuts and seeds sprinkled on top to add to your protein intake. You will find loads of veggie food sites on the net and cook books in your local library. The websites I have listed below should help you out!
Good luck and happy eating! :)How should I go about becoming a vegetarian?
Well for starters stop eating meat haha, but also you have to get protein so be sure to have peanut butter or beans or something. I usually have apples withpeanutt butter in the morning to have my protean. Google vegetarian recipes, always try to have fresh fruits and vegetables in the house. That's about it good luck!
Meat is bad for us. Fact. Adapting to a vegetarian lifestyle is a great thing, I'm glad you're making that choice.
Replacements for meat include soy, soy meat, mushrooms, oats, beans, tofu, many grains and various nuts.
Vegans or Vegetarians have absolutely no problem with protein. Also, plant foods are cheaper! How should I go about becoming a vegetarian?
Instead of real meat, use like, tofu! it's a good start.
