This has happened to me twice...
I've bought something that was totally vegetarian... n each time... when I was reading the ingredients while I was waiting for it to heat up or something... I found either lard or some other pork product in it!
So... what's going on? Why is there an animal product in a vegetarian meal?Pork products in vegetarian foods?
If it was labeled as vegetarian, you should definitely write the company about that. They should give you your money back.
If you were to work at a packaging company you would find that most items labeled that way use some kind of animal product. Even in the plastics and seals for the packaging. There is nothing illegal about marking them that way because it has no allergy issues. If people eat it, it's not going to kill them and most people will never know it's in there. And if you are that worried about it the only way you can be sure is to prepare everything yourself. They are under no obligation or law to tell you what products have animal oils or chemicals made from animal byproducts. You can study up on all the things on the labels with long complicated names if that's really how you want to spend your free time.Pork products in vegetarian foods?
That's completely despicable. If I were you I would phone their hotline and find out what the hell is going on, maybe they use a vegetarian lard if such a thing exists, and if not then take them to court because you will surely win and you will make a bundle. That's the American way.
Btw, as a Muslim you should have a problem with the meat of non-Muslims as it is haram.
Alot of mislabeling goes on in the food industry, and they often find ways to rename products so they don't sound like animal derived products. One example is "natural flavors", which are often animal derived. You will also want to avoid anything containing gelatine (jello) as it is made from the boiled skin, bones, ligaments and tendons of slaughtered cows and pigs. Also, many snack foods contain animal derived products. Here is a link to DORITOS products that contain animal ingredients:

I think they are just saying its vegetarian to sale the stuff, if what you say is true. Nonetheless, saying its vegetarian and putting pork or pork derivatives in it is deceptive. I would write the company and ask for a refund.
Well that is a shame that the Muslim stores closed down. They carry such wonderful products.
How about stores that carry kosher foods? While they might not be halal, at least you know there is no pork.
This is obviously misleading information on the part of the manufacturer. Whether somebody is vegetarian from dietary, ethical or religious reasons, you should not have to accept any product that does not give you what it actually states. You should certainly contact the manufacturer and let them know that they have been found out. It is actually more distressing that they are using pork products so that Muslim customers would then be eating food designated haram. If you get no satisfaction you could always consult a lawyer, I'm sure there will be somebody over there more than eager to take up this particular case.
If the product(s) say they are vegetarian on the package when they aren't then that is a violation. Some things, like re fried beans do have lard in them so I get Amy's brand vegetarian re fried beans because they don't contain lard.
You would be better finding foods that are designated "Halal" than vegetarian since the meaning of that word varies from culture to culture.
I am sorry that happened to you, but you can trust those products marked "halal". You might also check to see if any products that meet the requirements of kashrut also meet the requirement of Dhabi磨a Halal. It's an ongoing discussion.
Was it certified veg or vegan? Or did you assume it was vegetarian because there was no meat in it?
There are vegetarian companies that would never allow this. It all depends. At whole foods you can usually be sure the things are marked clearly on the cover.
How could it be "totally vegetarian" if it has lard in it?
I don't know how this question could make any less sense.
Try reading the ingredients before you buy something.
