When I was on a coaching course the guy giving the nutrition section said that if any of your athletes were vegetarians, he hoped that their nutritionist was better qualified than he was.

It is possible to be a vegetarian endurance runner, but you need to be extra careful about your diet because of the extra strains on the body due to the training required to run a marathon at the top levels of competition.

During my time coaching marathon runners I've only had 2 or 3 athletes who were vegetarians, and one of those actually collapsed during a training run. This was diagnosed as being due to the fact that she was not eating properly. At the time she was a vegetarian, so she started eating meat products.

She then went on to win the first international race that she ran, compete in several other European and world class events, and was even considered for the Olympic team.

I've attached a link that lists the world marathon times progression, for men and women, and it contains links to most of the athletes, but I haven't found any mention of diets of individual athletes.
