can you give me some simple recipes to get me started on my way??I have been a vegetarian for some time now, and eat tofu when dining out, but have not yet tried to cook with?
Purchase a marinade (or make one). I like to slice extra firm tofu into thin rectangles, marinade in teriyaki sauce and bake at 425 for 30 minutes or until brown.
Note: Drain tofu, wrap in unbleached paper towels and place in a colainder. Place a small plate on top of it and something heavy on top of the plate, like a can of tomato sauce. Let drain for 15 minutes before removing and slicing.I have been a vegetarian for some time now, and eat tofu when dining out, but have not yet tried to cook with?
If you like stirfries, just cut the tofu in pieces (drain the water first out of the pack) and through it onto a hottish pan with your veggies. Add some garlic, ginger, and whatever else you like. Recently I made up a batch of jerky type stuff.
1 block of tofu (firm or extra firm) cut into 1/4 inch strips
1 tbsp soy sauce
1 tsp dry mustard
1/2 tsp each garlic powder, onion powder, and/or whatever else spices or herbs you like (like cilantro)
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Marinate the tofu in the soy sauce for however long you want
Mix up the spices and coat each side of the tofu with the mixture
Place on a lightly oiled cookie sheet and bake for 45 min or so, until brown, flip halfway through
These are surprisingly good. I dip them in sour cream, or cut them into pieces and through them on a salad.
You can also take tofu, cut into bite size squares, put them in a bowl with olive oil and some salt and through them in an oven until browned. They'll puff up and be quite yummy. Through them into salads, stir fries or as a snack.
I recommend getting a vegetarian cookbook. They'll teach you a lot. I like Rebar. A great book and a must have. I also like Moosewood.
Good luck.I have been a vegetarian for some time now, and eat tofu when dining out, but have not yet tried to cook with?
Tofu scramble is really easy to make. Here's the recipe I use:
1 box Mori-Nu silken firm tofu, patted dry and mashed
1/8 tsp. turmeric
1 tsp. onion powder
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 cup of veggies (I use red %26amp; yellow peppers. You can use your favorite veggies -- tomatoes, broccoli, fresh mushrooms, onions, etc.)
Place the tofu in a lightly oiled saut茅 pan and cook over medium heat for 3 minutes. Add the remaining ingredients, stir well, and cook for 5 to 8 minutes, until the vegetables are cooked and the tofu is heated through.
Enjoy!
