I just don't get it. I've been a vegetarian for a some years now, and I'm so sick and tired of all the prosecution and negativity from people. I've even lost some really close friends for it. I'm not even sure what I did; I never shove my beliefs down people's throats or try to change anyone. The only times I argue is out of defense. Why do people hate vegetarians and vegans? And what can I do about all of this crap I've been getting? Why am I hated for being a vegetarian?
I can't answer you. I do know it's annoying how SOME vegans and vegatarians manage to work that fact into EVERY conversation. ("Oh, that horrible apartment fire? By the way, I'm a vegan!") I am not a vegetarian, but it does seem like people can't get their mind around the fact that some people don't want a pound of meat at ALL (or even most) meals. I like meat, but I don't eat it all the time, and the reaction is even odder if "you don't want cheese on your hamburger". (I like cheese; I like hamburgers, but I don't like cheeseburgers.) People look at you like you just said "my mother is a lesbian from Mars" or something. (I don't doubt that someday I'll be at Denny's and order oatmeal and the server will say "do you want cheese on that, hon?")
I doubt that anyone hates you, but many people just don't see the point of being vegetarian when animals are killed to be eaten anyway. They see it as a pointless rebellion. But then anything that is not considered 'normal' in today's warped society gets hassle and criticism from the brainless. Maybe you could try a different tact,. Let the negative stuff ride over you and laugh about how meat makes you feel like a stone age women. You might still get your leg pulled but at least it will be funny. Why am I hated for being a vegetarian?
I'mma vegetarian as well and glad to say the only hate I get for it is from one person.
I think maybe because if you're vegetarian or vegan, people assume you're pretentious about it.
Also, it just shows that you have different moral values from them, it's like if you announced your political beliefs to someone with different ones, they would probably react defensively.
It's pretty stupid, to be honest, but it's life.
Good luck. :)
I'm vegetarian too! :D Been so for about 2 years... soon to be 3!
Most people don't hate us, they're pretty tolerant. The only ones they seem to hate are the Extremists *Cough*PETA*Cough* and the ones who act as if eating meat is the worst thing you could ever do.
I could care less whether people eat meat, it's their body, not mine, a few years ago I was the same. People tell me that's one of the best qualities of my vegetarianism, tolerance for those who aren't.Why am I hated for being a vegetarian?
Never been the topic for a conversation with me...if anything, most people I have talked about this issue with admire vegetarians...I would love to give up meat but can't make that final step. I would not argue with people and let them know that. Let them stand and argue with the air...they have their view and I would leave them to it.
I'm a Vegan and people think it is strange. Most people eat meat so it is out of the norm which means people think it is weird.
I don't care because I know I'm doing the right thing because I love animals.
I don't know why anyone would get angry at you because you're vegan, either they have issues or there is another reason why people don't like you.
The people that don't understand, don't deserve to be your friends.
The same has happened to me, i totally get what you're saying
Are you chauvinistic?...If so, that'll suffice.
I totally understand I have people get angry at me just for finding out I dont eat meat. Its crazy
